Mrs. Doris Newsome Smith, age 89, of Charleston and formerly a longtime resident of Walterboro, passed away Sunday afternoon, January 17, 2016, at the Ashley River Plantation Assisted Living.

Funeral Services will be conducted 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, January 20, 2016, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Philip McNeal officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro.

The family will receive friends during a time of visitation prior to her funeral ceremony beginning at 1 o'clock that afternoon at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: First Baptist Church of Walterboro, 124 South Memorial Avenue, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.

Doris was born in Summerville, Georgia, but spent most of her early life in Rome, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lossie W. and Grady Newsome and her husband Austin "Smitty" Smith. She is survived by her three daughters, Judy Alden (Neil Diez) of Charleston, Phyllis Connelly (J.P.) of Edisto Island and Lila Spell (Tony) of Holly Hill; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and two sisters, Jackie Howell and Pat Popham both of Rome, Georgia.

While living in Walterboro, she spent most of her time working as a flower designer and working for the Ivanhoe Hallmark Shop and The South Carolina Artisan Center. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Walterboro where she was a member of the Miriam Clark Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Mary du bow Rich Garden Club of Walterboro.

The family gives special thanks to the staff and friends at Ashely River Plantation for their kind and loving care that they provided for "Momma D" while she lived there and especially during her sickness.
