Herbert Edward Mercer, Jr., age 81, passed away on November 11, 2024. A service will be held Saturday, November 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, Kingstree, SC, followed with burial in the Williamsburg Cemetery.
Mr. Mercer was born February 15, 1943, in Kingstree, SC, a son of the late Herbert Edward and Juanita Brown Mercer. He graduated from Kingstree High School in 1961. He attended the University of South Carolina and graduated cum laude from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1965. After graduating he joined the staff of Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia from 1967-1975. Over the next four decades, he owned and operated Mercer Funeral Home in Denmark, SC. He was a member of the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association.
In addition to his business, he served as a member of the South Carolina National Guard. He retired as the Assistant-Chief of the Denmark Fire Department after 25 years of service and was a member of the South Carolina State Firefighters Association. He was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club, and the Denmark Country Club. He was a member of the ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society. Mr. Mercer was a member of the Denmark Presbyterian Church, where he served as Chairman of the Deacons.
“Sonny” was a family man. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather, affectionately known as “PaPa.” He was a gentleman. He loved firetrucks, trains, reading the newspaper, and time with family. He loved honesty, respected integrity, and lead by example.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lillian Joan Turbeville Mercer; his daughter, Heather Mercer Ware (Sanford); his son, Herbert Edward Mercer, III (Erin); his grandchildren: Herbert Edward Mercer, IV, Elizabeth Grace Ware, Henry Hiatt Mercer, William Sanford Ware, IV, and Hugh Thomas Mercer.
Mr. Mercer is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Dianne Blankenship Mercer and Mrs. Pam Turbeville Ager (Lamar) along with two nieces: Kate Turbeville Heisler (Cliff) and Lane Turbeville Franklin (Michael). Mr. Mercer was predeceased by his brother, David Brown Mercer.
