Margaret “Peggy” Fretwell McDougald, 81, quietly and peacefully passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024 at her home.
Mrs. McDougald was born November 12, 1942 in Anderson SC to the late Samuel Joseph Fretwell and the late Margaret Parker Fretwell. She was a graduate of T.L. Hanna High School and The University of South Carolina where she earned a degree in Business Administration. While at USC she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and was elected Homecoming Queen in 1964. She later served on the USC Board of Visitors.
She was a board member of the Anderson YMCA, Anderson County Women’s Club, United Way of Anderson, Cancer Association of Anderson and Anderson Heritage. She was a member of the Senior Assembly and former member of the Anderson Garden Club. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson where she served the church in many roles including Co-Moderator of Presbyterian Women. She also taught business at Forest College. Peggy was an avid bridge player who dearly loved her bridge groups.
Surviving is her husband of 59 years, Douglas C. McDougald, Jr.; two sons, Douglas C. McDougald, III and Jesse F. McDougald (Greer); five grandchildren: Douglas C. “Max” McDougald, IV, Benjamin H. McDougald (Kinley); Margaret Ann “Meg” McDougald; Sarah Grace McDougald, and Jesse Fretwell “Wells” McDougald; one great-granddaughter, Cauley King McDougald; and one brother, Raymond B. Fretwell. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Samuel J. Fretwell, Jr. and William P. Fretwell.
The funeral service will be held Monday, September 16, 2024, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Dennis Tedder will officiate. Following the service, family will greet friends in the Welcome Center of the church. A private family entombment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson or the Anderson Area YMCA.
